Funeral Parade of Roses

(1969)Directed by Toshio Matsumoto105 minDrama
“Who's the fairest of them all?”

Eddie (Shinnosuke Ikehata) is a young woman working at a gay bar in 1960s Tokyo, where Gonda (Yoshio Tsuchiya), the owner, takes her as a lover and promotes her as the lead girl. That draws the jealousy of Leda (Osamu Ogasawara), the madam, who is also Gonda's partner, and none of them knows what else ties Eddie to him. Toshio Matsumoto, adapting Oedipus Rex, mixes staged scenes with documentary footage and experimental editing.
