Funny Cow

“When life knocks you down... stand up.”

In the working men's clubs of Northern England, a woman known only as Funny Cow (Maxine Peake) stands under the stage lights and tells a room of men jokes about her own life. Her past is rough, and she turns it into material, hoping the act will carry her up through the comedy circuit. Adrian Shergold shoots it in grainy, washed-out colour, so the clubs and terraced streets look the way a faded photograph does.
