Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn) is a quiet Greenwich Village book clerk who would rather talk philosophy than fashion. Then photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) spots her, and Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson), his magazine editor, sends her to Paris to model. Stanley Donen sets Gershwin songs against the city, and Jo stands there in the gown, still unsure she belongs in it.
