“America was born in the streets.”

Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) walks out of prison and back into the Five Points, the Irish immigrant's one aim to kill William Cutting, the gang leader who murdered his father. To get near Bill "The Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), he has to earn a place inside the man's circle, where Scorsese shows him what a loyal follower can see up close. In 1860s New York, every immigrant is fighting for a spot in a city that wants them gone.
