Garden State

Andrew Largeman (Zach Braff), a 26-year-old actor and waiter, flies home to New Jersey in 2003 when his mother dies. He has stopped taking the antidepressants he has been on for years, and his psychologist father, Gideon (Ian Holm), is still in the same town. Zach Braff wrote and directed this from his own life, and he lets Andrew meet Sam (Natalie Portman) as a stranger who is also struggling, and still wants to feel close to another person.
