Paula Alquist (Ingrid Bergman) marries Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer) and moves into the family mansion, where small things begin to go wrong. Objects go missing, and she is told she misplaced them herself. George Cukor keeps her inside the house, and Paula waits in the dim rooms of the family mansion as the gaslight sinks lower each night, certain she is losing her mind.
