In Japan in 1159, an uprising tears through the capital, and the samurai Moritō (Kazuo Hasegawa) pulls the lovely Kesa (Machiko Kyō) out of the violence. He falls for her at once, then learns she is already married, to Wataru Watanabe (Isao Yamagata). Teinosuke Kinugasa shot it in Eastmancolor, and Moritō, a man who knows only how to act, has to decide how far he will go for a woman who is not his to take.
