Alan McKim (John Gregson) and his wife Wendy (Dinah Sheridan) set out in their vintage car for the annual London to Brighton rally, while Ambrose Claverhouse (Kenneth More) drives his own entry alongside. The two men are old friends, and somewhere on the road they bet on which of them will be first back home. Henry Cornelius sends the two couples off together, and Alan and Wendy keep to the old car, the road to Brighton running out ahead of them.
