Solange (Carole Laure) won't eat, won't laugh, and nothing her husband Raoul (Gérard Depardieu) tries will lift her out of a gloom neither of them can explain. So he picks out a lover for her, a stranger named Stéphane (Patrick Dewaere), and watches to see whether the cure takes. Bertrand Blier films the three of them in plain, grainy rooms, in a style that treats the oddest decisions as ordinary.
