Motoko Kusanagi (Atsuko Tanaka), a cyborg special-ops agent, hunts a phantom hacker known as the Puppetmaster through Tokyo's neon infrastructure. Each clue pulls her deeper into a question about what separates mind from machine. Oshii builds the tension through careful surveillance and philosophical argument, racing toward the moment when Kusanagi must choose between her mission and the truth of her own consciousness.
