Inspector George Gideon (Jack Hawkins) of Scotland Yard starts his Monday with a traffic ticket, handed to him by a young constable, Simon Farnaby-Green (Andrew Ray), who has no idea who he is writing up. John Ford follows Gideon through a single day in which a trusted detective is found to have taken bribes, a murderer is loose, and a payroll robbery needs solving.
