Giovanni's Island

Junpei Senou (Kota Yokoyama) is a boy on Shikotan, a small island that has become part of the Sakhalin Oblast after the war ended. Mizuho Nishikubo follows him and his family as children from two countries begin, timidly, to befriend each other across a border. The friendship has to get past a language neither side shares and a history much larger than the children.
