Gladiator

“What we do in life echoes in eternity.”

A Roman general named Maximus (Russell Crowe) is betrayed by Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor's ambitious son, who seizes power after murdering his father. Stripped of his rank and sold into slavery, Maximus is forced into the arena as a gladiator, where he must fight to survive. Scott stages the combat in sand and shadow, the roar of the crowd swallowing every private grief, until violence becomes the only language left.
