In 1957, James Whale (Ian McKellen), the man who directed Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, lives retired and nearly alone, with only his dour housekeeper Hanna (Lynn Redgrave) and his memories for company. When she hires a handsome young gardener, Clayton Boone (Brendan Fraser), the flamboyant director starts asking him to sit and talk. Bill Condon, adapting Christopher Bram's novel, lets the two men circle each other slowly.
