In 1950s Georgia, Ty Ty Walden (Robert Ryan) has spent years digging holes across his cotton farm, sure his grandfather buried gold somewhere beneath it. Anthony Mann shot it in black and white, with his sons, including Buck (Jack Lord), working the shovels beside him. Meanwhile poverty, unemployment, drink and a family's wandering marriages press in on the land, and the holes keep multiplying.
