Freighters in the Pacific are being torn open, and the only clue is a set of enormous footprints left behind. Dr. Niko Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick), a scientist who studies worms, is pulled in to work out what made them, with a French agent (Jean Reno) quietly watching over his shoulder. Roland Emmerich sends the trail to Manhattan, where the military has to kill the creature before it can reproduce.
