The Depression has shut down every show on Broadway, and three showgirls are broke and out of work. Carol (Joan Blondell), Trixie (Aline MacMahon) and Polly (Ruby Keeler) set out to take money from a repugnant man of high society, Lawrence (Warren William), hoping to keep their show alive. Mervyn LeRoy directs, and if the scheme falls short, the girls lose the stage and the rent that comes with it.
