Golden Door

Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) is a poor Sicilian farmer and a widower, and he decides to take his sons and his old mother to America. On the ship he meets Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg), an Englishwoman who needs a husband before they reach New York. Emanuele Crialese puts the family through the quarantine and examinations at Ellis Island, where officers decide whether poor farmers from Sicily are let in or sent home.
