Nobody on the street can say why the two Hayashi boys have stopped talking. All they know is that the brothers, who spent weeks nagging for a television set, now answer every question with silence. Ozu follows the neighbors as the quiet spreads through the houses, and the grown-ups find that the small courtesies that hold the block together are suddenly at risk.
