Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams) wants to be heard, and in Saigon in 1965 he finally gets a microphone, a spot on Armed Forces Radio, and a barracks full of troops who need to laugh. His rock records and fast ad-libs delight the soldiers and enrage Lt. Steven Hauk (Bruno Kirby), who prefers the approved playlist. Barry Levinson's film is a broadcaster's joke told in a war zone, where the laughter on the air sits beside the fighting just outside the booth.
