“This is how love is...and always will be...”

In Paris in 1961, Paula Tessier (Ingrid Bergman) is a middle-aged interior decorator whose longtime partner, Roger Demarest (Yves Montand), keeps taking up with younger women. Then Philip Van der Besh (Anthony Perkins), the 25-year-old son of a client, starts courting her, and she turns him away. Anatole Litvak, working from Françoise Sagan's novel, leaves Paula alone in her apartment, waiting on the telephone.
