“Some people are dying to hear it.”

Derrick Webb (James Marsden) wants a grade that will get noticed in Professor Goodwin's (Eric Bogosian) class, and he has two friends willing to help him earn it. Together they invent a rumor about the most popular girl on campus, Naomi Preston (Kate Hudson), and set out to watch where it travels. Davis Guggenheim keeps the three of them tracking each retelling, and Derrick starts to realize he can't take any of it back.
