Goya in Bordeaux

(1999)Directed by Carlos Saura100 minDrama, History

Francisco Goya (Francisco Rabal) is old, deaf and ill, living out his last years in Bordeaux, a voluntary exile from the rule of Ferdinand VII. He keeps painting at night, and his daughter Rosario (Dafne Fernández) shares the house while his headaches pull the past back into the room. Carlos Saura follows those flashbacks, where Goya meets again the people and years that shaped him, and the film treats memory as the thing an old man cannot stop painting.
