Francisco Goya (Stellan Skarsgård) wants to get Inés Bilbatúa (Natalie Portman), the young woman who sits for his paintings, out of the Inquisition's cells after she is arrested for heresy. Her family begs him to use his acquaintance with Lorenzo (Javier Bardem), the churchman whose portrait he is painting. Forman sets the two of them in Goya's studio, the Inquisitor seated and still, the painter looking at him.
