Grave of the Fireflies

“Why do fireflies have to die so soon?”

An air raid over Kobe in the last months of the war kills the mother of Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi) and leaves him alone with his little sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi). After a falling out with their aunt, the two move into an abandoned bomb shelter. Isao Takahata follows Seita, fourteen years old, as he tries to feed and protect a four-year-old with no relatives left and the rations running out.
