Trina (Zasu Pitts) wins a lottery prize, and the money lands in a household that had been comfortable without it. Her husband John McTeague (Gibson Gowland), a San Francisco dentist, wants her to spend it. Erich von Stroheim shows Marcus (Jean Hersholt), once John's best friend and Trina's old suitor, watching the winnings from across the room, while Trina counts her coins and holds on to them.
