“The story of two people who got married, met and then fell in love.”

Brontë Mitchell (Andie MacDowell) wants one apartment badly enough to marry a stranger for it, since the building will only rent to a couple. The stranger is Georges Fauré (Gérard Depardieu), a French waiter whose visa is running out. Peter Weir sends them home together to convince the immigration service, and Brontë, a woman who tends her plants and her routines carefully, finds her ordered life crowded by a man she barely knows.
