Abel (Anthony Perkins) leaves Venezuela after a revolution and heads for the Amazon, hoping to find some peace in the mountains and the forest. There he meets Rima (Audrey Hepburn), an orphan who lives among the trees and is called the Bird Girl, and whom a nearby jungle tribe fears. Mel Ferrer's film sets Abel's growing love for her against that fear, and the two of them stand to lose the quiet they each came looking for.
