“It's the end of the world as we know it.”

John Garrity (Gerard Butler) wants one thing as a comet races toward Earth: to get his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) and their young son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) to a place that might survive it. The family sets out on a long trek through a country coming apart as the countdown runs down. Ric Roman Waugh keeps the camera tight on the Garritys, so the disaster stays a danger they hear about and run from.
