“The only thing more dangerous than the front lines was the fight to get there.”

Commander Krause (Tom Hanks) is a Navy officer in his first command, a destroyer escorting a convoy of allied ships through the Black Pit, the stretch of the Atlantic with no air cover. For five days, U-boats close in on the slow merchant ships and the thousands of soldiers aboard. Aaron Schneider keeps nearly everything on Krause's bridge, where he gives orders, sleeps little, and answers for every ship in the line.
