Joey Drayton (Katharine Houghton) comes home from a trip with a fiancé nobody knew existed, and she wants her parents' blessing by the end of the evening. John Prentice (Sidney Poitier) is a doctor, and he is black, which sends Matt (Spencer Tracy) and Christina Drayton (Katharine Hepburn) into a long afternoon of trying to decide what they believe. Stanley Kramer keeps almost all of it in one house and lets the talk carry it.
