Eddie Ginley (Albert Finney) calls bingo numbers in a Liverpool club, but he talks and walks like a Bogart detective and badly wants the job to match. He places a newspaper ad offering his services as a private eye, and a case lands on him that involves smuggling. Stephen Frears's first feature is about a man living out a fantasy that the world around him has no room for.
