Regimental Sergeant Major Lauderdale (Richard Attenborough) runs his corner of a British army post in East Africa by the book, and he has no plans to change as the empire's last days arrive. John Guillermin sets the film among the people under his care, including Colonel Deal (Jack Hawkins) and the visiting Miss Barker-Wise (Flora Robson). When a local coup breaks out around the post, the lives of everyone inside depend on Lauderdale's old-fashioned discipline.
