The California Atoms sit in last place in a 1976 pro football season with no hope of climbing out. Then the mule who has been the team's mascot gets moved onto the roster, where Gus turns out to be able to kick a field goal from 100 yards away. Vincent McEveety lets Hank Cooper (Ed Asner) and Coach Venner (Don Knotts) argue over the animal that has changed their team, while the rival clubs fume.
