“A surreal village noir”

Jens Fauser (Frederick Lau) walks out of the forest one summer morning with a duffel bag he won't let anyone look inside, and all he wants is work. The farmers in the nearby village turn him away until Lucy (Vicky Krieps), the mayor's unruly daughter, takes a liking to him, and then he gets a job and a caravan to live in. Govinda Van Maele films the tidy, welcoming surface of the village with a stillness that makes you watch the edges of every frame.
