“MIRACLES DO HAPPEN!”

Woodrow Truesmith (Eddie Bracken) has been discharged from the Marines over hay fever, and he is too ashamed to go home. A group of Marines he meets at a bar, led by Sgt. Heppelfinger (William Demarest), decide to send him back to his mother with a made-up story of wounds and honor. Preston Sturges follows Woodrow off the train into a town ready to cheer, and he is no longer sure he can tell anyone the truth.
