Hanagatami

Spring, 1941: sixteen-year-old Toshihiko (Shunsuke Kubozuka) is sent to the coastal town of Karatsu to live with his aunt, who is caring for his sick cousin. He falls in with the town's other restless teenagers, among them Ukai (Shinnosuke Mitsushima) and Kira (Keishi Nagatsuka), while the war presses closer to all of them. Nobuhiko Obayashi, working from Kazuo Dan's 1937 novel, fills the seaside with the nature and culture the boys move through.
