In a small Danish town, Hans Christian Andersen (Danny Kaye) mends shoes by day and tells stories to anyone who will sit still. The schoolchildren come running, and the schoolmaster does not like it. Charles Vidor's musical follows Hans out onto the road to Copenhagen, where he meets the ballerina Doro (Zizi Jeanmaire) and her husband Niels (Farley Granger), and the stories keep coming, a shoemaker's hands still busy with tales.
