Happiness

(1935)Directed by Aleksandr Medvedkin63 minComedy, Drama

Khmyr (Pyotr Zinovyev) is a poor peasant who only wants a decent life, and every road to one runs through someone who wants his last coin. Priests grab at him, a worn-out horse barely pulls its weight, and his wife Anna (Yelena Yegorova) stays beside him through all of it. Aleksandr Medvedkin plays it as silent slapstick, working from a simple fact: the people around Khmyr are always hungrier than he is.
