Happy End

Bedřich Frydrych (Vladimír Menšík), a butcher, wants one thing from his last day: to be understood by the people who are about to watch him die. The film opens on his execution and runs backward from there, past his wife Jůlie (Jaroslava Obermaierová) and the murder that put him on the scaffold. Oldřich Lipský shows the whole of his life in reverse, and the final image is of Frydrych's birth.
