Harakiri

O-Take-San (Lil Dagover), the daughter of Daimyo Tokuyawa (Paul Biensfeldt), wants a life she can choose for herself, and her father's harakiri is meant to buy her that chance. She falls in love with a European officer and marries him, and when he sails home to Europe he promises to return for her and their child. Fritz Lang's 1919 silent film takes Madame Butterfly as its source, and it turns on how little a promise made in love can bind the person who made it.
