Hard to Be a God

Rumata (Leonid Yarmolnik) is a scientist from Earth posted on the planet Arkanar, which is stuck in its own Middle Ages, with orders to help its people toward progress and to kill no one. He moves through the local court, where Don Reba (Aleksandr Chutko) and the soldiers are rounding up intellectuals to punish. Aleksei German, working from the Strugatsky brothers' novel, makes Rumata watch it happen, and he has to decide how long he can keep his hands clean.
