““Oh my God, that's my daughter.””

Jake VanDorn (George C. Scott) is a conservative Midwestern businessman, a churchgoing man who runs his life by rules. When his teenage daughter disappears in California, he follows her trail to Los Angeles and into its pornography trade, with Niki (Season Hubley), a prostitute, as his only guide. Paul Schrader leaves Jake alone at night in the grainy light of a rented room, a man in a dark suit among strangers whose world he cannot read.
