Harold and Maude

“They were meant to be. But exactly what they were meant to be is not quite clear.”

Harold (Bud Cort) keeps staging his own deaths, and his mother, Mrs. Chasen (Vivian Pickles), meets each one with the same weary patience. Then at a stranger's funeral he notices Maude (Ruth Gordon), a 79-year-old who turns up at services the way other people go to the park. Hal Ashby plays the whole thing dry and level, and lets Harold's flat face do the joking.
