Panturle (Gabriel Gabrio), a poacher in a Provençal village the young have all left, wants a wife, a family and a field to work again. Then Urbain Gedemus (Fernandel), a travelling knife-grinder, rolls in with Arsule (Orane Demazis), a woman he treats as his servant. Marcel Pagnol sets the story in the thirties, among a few old people and bare farmland, and what grows between Panturle and Arsule is the closeness of two people who have only each other.
