A wealthy old man named Samuel Fulton (Charles Coburn) turns up in a small Vermont town in the 1920s under the name John Smith, and the family he has come to size up has no idea who he is. Douglas Sirk fills the town with flappers, raccoon coats and the Charleston, while Millicent Blaisdell (Piper Laurie) and her boyfriend Dan Stebbins (Rock Hudson) feel the effects of his test. It all comes down to what a family is worth to one another when money is on the table.
