Johanna Parry (Kristen Wiig), a shy caretaker, takes a letter from a man she barely knows, Ken (Guy Pearce), and believes he is falling in love with her. The letter is a prank by Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld), the teenage girl in her care, and Johanna has no idea. Liza Johnson, adapting Alice Munro's story, watches a lonely person start to hope, and what it takes for that hope to be believed.
