Hortense (Catherine Frot) is a cook from the French countryside, and she is plucked from her own small kitchen to feed the president of the Republic (Jean d'Ormesson) in the private quarters of the Élysée Palace. The story comes from the real Danièle Mazet-Delpeuch, who became François Mitterrand's personal chef. Christian Vincent films the work close up and plainly, with attention on the plates and the people waiting for them.
