“James Michener's novel reaches the screen.”

In the 1820s, a Yale divinity student named Abner Hale (Max von Sydow) marries Jerusha Bromley (Julie Andrews) and sails with her from New England to the island kingdom of Hawaii. George Roy Hill moves the story from the plain village of Old Sturbridge to the green coasts of Kauai and Oahu. Abner carries his Calvinist certainty ashore like luggage, and Jerusha stays beside a husband who cannot bend.
