Stephen Hawking (Benedict Cumberbatch) turns 21 in 1963, a Cambridge PhD student who wants to find the beginning of time. At his birthday party he meets Jane Wilde (Lisa Dillon), who is drawn to his talk of stars and the Universe, until the night Stephen suddenly finds he cannot stand up. Philip Martin follows the early years of a young man whose mind reaches for the whole Universe while his body begins to fail him.
